Thinking Of Hiring; Should I leave it until the New Year?
Thinking Of Hiring; Should I leave it until the New Year?
As Christmas is hurtling towards us as rapidly as ever, in the staffing and recruitment sector we come across two trains of thought.
The focus is on closing out for the year, getting some year end reviews put in place and organising those Christmas and Year end parties. January brings the New Year, New Career mindset and this will be the best time to kick off.
On the other hand, you may well have New Year Strategies in place, the headcount and hiring strategies are an ongoing process, whilst you may be forecasting a slow down on recruiting activity it remains a live objective.
Both are valid and both hold merit to an extent.
Let’s consider it from a candidate perspective.
First off, the best candidates across any sector will be forward thinking. They do not want to get caught up in the New Year, New Career cohort, they are registering with recruiters now to get ahead of the game, setting out what it is they are looking for and content that they will be moving on from their current positions and fixed on finding that next opportunity.
From a pure competitive perspective, having your roles live and, on the market, will undoubtedly give you more visibility, in the current job climate the war on talent remains as challenging as ever, potentially even more so given uncertain economic headwinds and the potential of more risk adverse career decisions being made.
Taking the opportunity now to have the chance to engage more talent into your pipeline is hugely advantageous, the chance to really engage candidates with your brand, your forward planning and objectives for the year ahead can not be understated. On average candidates will not interview with more than three firms before making a career decision- that’s something to keep in mind for getting ahead.
The highly competitive nature of the January period with offers, counteroffers, time pressures to ensure objectives are achieved for Q1 targets can make the interview process somewhat rushed and pressurised. A candidate experience that is more controlled and less pressurised by outside factors can often be the difference between accepting your opportunity and not.
There is a lot to be said for actually stepping up your recruitment activity during this period. Whilst this may seem counter intuitive, getting ahead can lead to a rapidly stronger start to the New Year for your teams and business.
In the War On Talent, any chance to win a battle should be taken.
