Civil Engineering Design Manager | Northern Ireland
Vickerstock Recruitment are working with a specialist civil engineering consultancy to recruit a Civil Engineering Design Manager to support the delivery of complex tunnelling and heavy civil engineering projects across Ireland and the UK.
This role has been created to strengthen the interface between design and construction, ensuring that technically complex schemes are not only compliant and innovative, but fundamentally buildable. The position would suit someone who has previously worked as a Design Manager within a main contractor or specialist tunnelling contractor and understands the realities of delivering challenging works on site.
Your new role as Civil Engineering Design Manager
As Civil Engineering Design Manager, you will take ownership of design management across tunnelling and heavy civils packages across the cross the Transport, Energy, Water, Buildings, and Aviation. You will act as the technical link between designers, site teams and project leadership.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Managing and coordinating designs, including both temporary and permanent works
- Leading the design management process from early-stage development through construction and handover
- Reviewing and challenging designs to ensure constructability, safety and programme alignment
- Working closely with site teams to resolve technical issues and manage design changes in live environments
- Supporting value engineering, risk mitigation and alternative technical solutions
- Acting as a senior technical point of contact for internal stakeholders and external design partners
What you will need to succeed
To be successful in this role, you will likely have:
- A degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline
- Strong experience in tunnelling and/or heavy civil engineering projects
- Previous experience working as a Design Manager for a contractor within the Civil Engineering sector
- A strong understanding of temporary works, sequencing and construction methodology
- Confidence challenging design outputs and driving practical, site-led solutions
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work across design, commercial and construction teams
- Chartered status (ICE or equivalent) would be beneficial but is not essential.
