Vickerstock are proud to be working in partnership with Newry, Mourne and Down District Council to recruit a Temporary Environmental Health Officer (P01 - Facilities & Environment) to cover a 13-week sickness absence. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Environmental Health professional to join a busy team within the Sustainability and Environment section, focusing on food safety and related public health matters.

The Role
Reporting to the Senior Environmental Health Officer, you will play a key role in ensuring the Council complies with statutory and legislative requirements, delivering high-quality services that protect public health. This will include:

• Carrying out visits, inspections, and investigations across the Council District

• Undertaking routine inspections of food premises in line with legislative and departmental standards

• Investigating complaints and responding to public health enquiries

• Conducting sampling programmes, interpreting results, and taking enforcement action where required

• Preparing professional reports, licences, permits, and approvals

• Liaising with internal teams, elected members, statutory agencies, and community groups

• Providing technical advice on planning applications and environmental impacts

• Representing the Council at meetings and, where necessary, in court proceedings

• Supporting training initiatives and mentoring junior staff or students on placement

Essential Criteria

• A recognised degree or equivalent in Environmental Health

• Full current driving licence and access to transport (essential car user allowance applies)

• Demonstrable experience in food safety inspections and enforcement

• Knowledge of relevant legislation, codes of practice, and statutory guidance

• Location: Based at Greenbank Offices, Newry, with travel across the district (possible base in Downpatrick)

• Rate: £20.58 per hour PAYE

• Hours: 36 per week (Monday-Friday)

• Contract: 13 weeks
